"THEY HAD FOUR YEARS is GENERATORprojects annual new graduate exhibition with artists selected from the previous years Scottish degree shows. This years artists are Stephen Bloe (DJCAD) & Eric Schumacher (ECA). The artists have been developing a newly commissioned body of work over the past year that will culminate in TH4Y 2011. The exhibition will bring together the sculptural installations of Schumacher and the audio visual journeys of Bloe.
For my contribution to They Had Four Years, I developed a complex MIDI environment that used three television monitors to visually interpret a musical score. Triggered autonomously by Ableton Live software, each note on a Yamaha DX7 synthesizer corresponded to a colour block on each of the three monitors. Intricate musical arrangements were used to trigger strobing visual patterns that periodically illuminated the darkened gallery space and created a vivid light interplay with Schumacher's abstract sculptures.
